Hippo Hunting in Zimbabwe

Hippo is usually hunted alongside buffalo, on the water's edge along [Lake Kariba / the Zambezi / river name]. It is a hunt of stalking the bank, waiting for the right moment and making one precise shot.

The hunt

How a Hippo Hunt Works

In the Water

Most hippo are hunted in the water, where only the head shows. You stalk to the bank, settle on a solid rest and wait for a mature bull to surface and hold still.

On Land

Occasionally a bull is found grazing away from the water at dawn or dusk. That is the most dangerous way to meet a hippo, and your PH will be right at your side.

Recovery

A hippo shot in the water sinks and floats again some hours later, so recovery takes patience and a boat or a team on the bank.
