Sable antelope in the Hwange wilderness, Zimbabwe

Sable Hunting in Zimbabwe

For many hunters the sable is the most beautiful antelope in Africa: a jet-black bull with a white face mask and long horns sweeping back over his shoulders. Zimbabwe is one of the best places to hunt one.

The hunt

How We Hunt Sable

Woodland and Vleis

Sable herds feed along the edges of open grassy vleis and drink in the heat of the day. We look for fresh sign at water, then stalk the herd on foot through the woodland.

Judging a Bull

An old bull is the darkest in the herd, with thick, heavily ridged horns that curve well back. Your PH glasses the herd carefully, because cows and young bulls look similar at a distance.

Details

Calibre, Season and Area
